Woman In Black Live Theatre Review Essay Example For Students
Woman In Black Live Theatre Review Essay On the 29th of November I went to see the woman in black at the fortune theatre in London. The play was adapted from Susan Hillââ¬â¢s original novel, ââ¬ËThe Woman in Blackââ¬â¢, by Stephan Mallart into a semi-naturalistic play within a play. The book pulled on themes from Victorian ghost stories, making it a horror filled with anticipation, the constant air of suspense with underlying menace and threat is replicated superbly. The director, Robin Herford, uses theatrical techniques to ignite and excite our imagination, forcing us to imagine something far worse than what we are actually seeing. Herfordââ¬â¢s main intention is to scare us, something, judging by the constant screams, he does quite well. The play also continuously hints towards its period setting, showing the era through the period costume, like bowler hats, and referring to ââ¬Ëmodernââ¬â¢ technology, like recorded sound. We will write a custom essay on Woman In Black Live Theatre Review specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The theatre itself appeared to be from the Victorian era and is a proscenium arch with a thrust coming out of the CS. The thrust was used by both David Acton and Ben Deery to come out of their various characters and narrate parts of the story, speaking directly to the audience. For the majority of the play a fourth wall was created, but as the thrust came out of the stage it seemed to also come out of the fourth wall. The theatre was also small, making us feel trapped and intensifying the experience because the audience feed off each otherââ¬â¢s emotions. When we first entered the theatre we noticed how the stage was set with an odd assortment of unclean, well used items (a chair, a wicker basket, a costume rail covered in a dirty sheet, two buckets and an abandoned piece of scenery placed slightly off stage). The props had no obvious connection and appeared to have no purpose, creating the image of a theatre in the dark, as was the intention of both director, Robin Herford, and designer, Michael Holt. This effect was also created by the dull, dark colours of the props and set. The lack of set also enhanced the idea of an abandoned, unused theatre. A grey gauze obscured the back half of the stage and the floor was painted to look like old wooden floor boards, giving us no real indication of where the play was set and added to the bleak and empty feel. The floor had been painted so that it was darker near the edges and lighter near the middle, focusing our attention and intensifying the play. The play started with Mr (R-)Kipps (R-Kipps refers to real Kipps, Mr kipps to actor in role) walking onstage. There was no indication from lighting or sound that the play had begun as neither changed, even the house lights didnââ¬â¢t go down. This, the lack of set and Mr (R-)Kipps repeating and tripping over his lines gave an immediate amateurish feel to the production. However Mr (R-)Kipps was then interrupted by the actor, who was standing behind the people sitting in the stalls, making them jump. He referred to all the empty seats as he made his way up to the stage, making it clear that the play was set in a theatre and that we werenââ¬â¢t really there, creating a fourth wall. The fact that the lighting and sound hadnââ¬â¢t changed made us think that the production was set in the theatre we were sitting in, immediately making the play (and the non-existent threat of the woman in black) more realistic. The actors were performing for a long time before the house lights finally faded out, allowing us to be slowly drawn in and as the story darkened so did the stage lighting and the seating area around us. .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b , .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .postImageUrl , .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b , .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:hover , .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:visited , .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:active { border:0!important; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:active , .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u079628ae2ba065205daa781ccc22e71b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The play starts EssayThe key way in which they differentiated between the play (the Actor helping Mr (R-)Kipps) and the play within the play (PWP) (the Actor playing Mr Kipps) was the use of sound and lighting. The PWP used a vast array of sound and lighting drawing us into the story, where as the play used a basic wash of white light, and if a sound effect was added it was always commented upon (e.g. the clock ticking to make the office), and had only been added in the first place as it was going to be used in the PWP. The Actor communicated with the imaginary sound technician Mr Bruce by moving DS, looking up, past audience and clicking his fingers to do this. He would also click his fingers at Mr Bruce to snap out of the PWP. This was extremely effective as we were always aware of which play we were viewing. However I found it annoying as after they had been building up tension in the PWP to suddenly snap out of it destroyed the tension and took us away from the story, making us once again aware that we were watching a play. This also made the scenes that took part in the play seemed long and drawn out, as the lack of lighting and sound meant that the play relied solely on the acting, script and plot, weakening the overall production. However the performances during the PWP were fantastic. David Acton convincingly became a variety of different characters, convincingly changing his accent for each character depending on their class and area they lived (e.g. country accent) as well as giving them certain characteristic, for instance Tomesââ¬â¢s sniff. The tone and pace of his voice would also change, for instance Keckwick had a slow, deep, emotionless voice with a thick country accent. He also had an emotionless facial expression and was hunched over, creating a secrecy about the character that made us very wary of him. His transformation between the different characters was also aided with simple costume changes that dictated the class and background of the character, as well as suiting the situation they were currently in. For example to become Keckwick he donned a dark green coat, an old scarf and brown hat. All the items looked well used, inexpensive and were darkly coloured, suitably making the character looked dressed for a cold night or day, showing he is working-class as well as indicating to the audience that the characters were outside. Where as to be Mr Jerome at the funeral he dressed smartly in a black suit and top hat (middle or upper class), again this suited the character and the situation. The majority of the costume changes were done on stage with the open use of a clothes rail. This is a Brechtian technique that asks the audience to suspend their disbelief and momentarily breaks the fourth wall. However we were perfectly happy to accept the actors doing it, as we simply believed him to be Mr Kipps acting.

Trailblazing by Eric Anderson
Trailblazing by Eric Anderson Free Online Research Papers After reading Trailblazing by Eric Anderson I was blown away by the story told in the book. It is a story of self-realization, persecution, and perseverance. At first it was hard to believe that this was the same person I see in lecture twice a week. It shows the fears and terrors that closeted homosexuals go through to keep their secret, then the oppression they face after coming out. It has truly opened my eyes to the hardships gay people face when wanting to do no more than be themselves but cant for fear of being abandoned by loved ones and ridiculed by others. Not only must the author deal with discrimination, but his team of high school track runners face being taunted, threatened, and even physically assaulted by their peers. They have to put up with just as much harassment as Anderson himself. Even though none of the athletes claim to be gay they are endlessly hazed for being a fag team. Through all the conflicts the team remains loyal and stands by their coach. They not only compete as a team but also deal with oppression as a team. Trailblazing is a very moving piece about heroism and is inspiring for people of all sexual preferences. In the beginning of the story Anderson describes going through most of his childhood knowing he is gay, though at the time did not know exactly what that meant. Many points brought up in class are evident in the story. How he was forced to act like all the other boys because of how society felt about gays. Forcing himself to act straight and pretending to be attracted to women he becomes sucked into this highly hegemonic society. Guys have to be big, bad, and tough, and if they arent they are labeled faggots or fairy boys. You can feel the awkwardness of Anderson as he talks about how he acted compared to what he actually felt. In the beginning of his career as a track coach Anderson continues to keep his secret from everyone. Constantly making excuses for not dating girls, that where socially acceptable. Filling his time with work and studies at first as a smokescreen for his sexuality. He then aspires to become more educated and to become a health teacher. A gay person in sports is still a big issue in this country, especially when the person is a coach of younger kids. People still view homosexuals as stereotypical promiscuous pedophilia. People think that just because a coach is gay that he is going to start hitting on all his players. There is also the ridiculous belief that since a teacher or coach is gay, they will somehow make their pupils gay or infect them if you will. To the readers surprise when Anderson comes out to his friends he is faced with little to no judgment. But once word of his sexuality spreads beyond his control not everyone is as accepting as his friends, and family. Then the issue of gays being discriminated in the workplace comes up repeatedly as he and his runners are harassed on many different occasions. Every time there is an incident Anderson would file a report to the school and every time it would be ignored. This is a prime example of discrimination of gays in the workplace. The team members wo uld be taunted several times a day, called faggots. Their cars, including Andersons, would get keyed often, and the principal would do nothing about it. After learning that their coach is a homosexual several members of the team became activists for gay rights. One of them went as far as starting a Gay-Straight Alliance at Huntington Beach High School were they attended, even though the kid was not gay. This by no mean improved their situation at school. For some reason it is thought that is you believe in treating homosexuals as equals you must be homosexual yourself. This ignorant logic has been around for a long time. It is not as bad as it was at one time but is still a major problem in the fight for equal rights for gays. After long standing tension with the schools football team it became clear to Anderson that it wouldnt be long before physical violence would arise. This nightmare became a reality the day before graduation, the year before Anderson planned to leave Huntington Beach High School for a college level job. As a result of a short confrontation in the locker room in school there was heavy friction between one of Andersons senior runners, named Jerryme and a sophomore football player, named Josh. Of coarse this was started because of the homophobia of the football team and coach. Apparently the football coach didnt want anyone else to use the locker room so it wouldnt get messed up. And when the track team went to get changed the football team went on full defensive and would not let the fag team in. This was also ignored by the schools administrators. Months later as Jerryme and fellow runner, Jess where chased by the football players into a residential neighborhood. Upon exiting the car Josh told the other players to restrain Jess as he ran for Jerryme. Jerryme ended up with a swollen face and a fractured jaw. This is clear evidence of homophobia to such an extreme that this kid felt he must pound Jerryme, who was gay as far as Josh was concerned, until he was dead. For what? To show how big of a man he is. So Josh got to prove how straight he is for a while, while Jerryme gets to have five screws attached to his lower jaw for the rest of his life. Reading this book gave me a new perspective on life. Its inspired me to be a more tolerant person. It addresses many problems in the society caused by hegemony. It brings to light the dangerous effects of homophobia in school sports. Tackling a difficult subject, Anderson really makes a point that homophobia in sports is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. The Greater Good - Essay Example Leaders have the greatest responsibility to ensure that the whole society benefits from their leadership more than they benefit themselves. A good leader is the one who believes that leadership is an individual decision and sacrifice to dedicate their time, as well as their energy to bring benefits not to themselves, but to the needs of other people. Jackie Chan Vs Harold Lloyd Essay Example for Free
Jackie Chan Vs Harold Lloyd Essay Originality or the issue of authenticity is a paragon of any discussion. Arguing who or what is original is tantamount to debating which came first whether the egg or the chicken and which came first, language or notion. Several critics are bombarded with the originality factor in evaluating a piece; be it literary, performing arts, scientific discovery, etc. The talk about the first to do this and that should be set a side as far as criticism is concern because there is no such thing as original. If there is this one original thing in the realm of concepts and tangible things, it could be traced on the immediate before and/or after of Earthââ¬â¢s primordial soup status. Taking the writing techniques of the modern time as an example, it started long time ago when the ancient people vandalized in caves and stones. The markings in the caves and stones that are evident up to the present evolved to writings in the leaves and other minute things that are easily carried. Generations passed by and the people learned to devise the scrolls and parchment to better preserve the writings that contained the manuscripts of what happened in their time. At present, with the help of the fast developing technology, and with the desire of the people to carry things and information to the next generations in a handy manner, writings can now be saved in electronic gadgets. Thus, the emerging technological advancement that caters to the preservation of writing in the present time has no right to argue with their precedent on originality, so as the other way around. People should understand that absolute authenticity can never be achieved since every new product that comes into the market is an innovation of an old product. This issue is also the same as the idolatry issue. It is improper to claim oneself as an origin of many things that are like him or her in one way or another. Movie actors and actresses for example copied their styles and techniques from the elders in their industry. However, these ââ¬Å"eldersâ⬠cannot deny the fact that their strategies and styles were adaptations of those older than them, example: people from the realm of theater. Yes, the adaptation of movie actors from theater actors is possible because the later people emerged in the entertainment industry earlier. But this theater people could not be considered the point of origin of acting as performing arts, note that prior to the development of theater, rhetoric in the form of public speaking was practiced by Phaedrus and many others during the ancient times. And the chain backed track on and on and on. Idolizing other people should not be taken negatively. In the first place, people idolize other people because of the inspiration that ones get from its idol. For a healthy society that evolves progressively through time, idolatry is normal. In fact it should be acknowledged and encouraged because it ignites innovativeness in the part of those who idolize; since they are inspired to reach what their idols got and even more that what their idol got. This is supported by Bob Ong, a Filipino writerââ¬âauthor of ABNKKBSNPLAK, Bakit Baliktad Magbasa ang mga Pinoy, Paboritong Libro ni Hudas, Almat ng Gubat, and Stainless Longanisa. In one part of his latest book, Stainless Longanisa, he said that idolizing helps people progress. He confessed that he is never ashamed of claming Robert Fulghum as his idol in writing because Robert figuratively pushes him to go further, reaches Robert, and even surpass Robert. A very fine example of this talk is Jackie Chan and Harold Lloyd. If we are to examine Jackie Chanââ¬â¢s comedy style, it is apparently influenced by Harold Lloyd. However, we have to put into our consciousness that the authenticity is out of the talk. In comparing and contrasting the two actors, the aim should be: to distinguish the specific effects or influence of Harold to Jackie and to differentiate their style if there is any identified difference. The comparison of the two can only be limited to the identification of their commonalities and difference and their styleââ¬â¢s effects to the viewers because it is impossible to evaluate who is better between the two of them. First, they do not belong to the same generation. It would be unfair to Harold because during his time, movie and television technology is not that advanced compared to the time of Jackie. And second, the two have different set of audience so it would be a joke if we are to contest them based on a specific period of time e. g. Haroldââ¬â¢s time or Jackieââ¬â¢s time. The evaluation of their appeal to their audience should be evaluated contextually. Haroldââ¬â¢s evaluation should be based on his period and Jackie in Jackieââ¬â¢s period. One commonality of the two is that they both do stunts. Both Jackie and Harold hanged on helicopters, buildings, and busses. Jackies willingness to do his own stunts, originally the trademark feature of his movies, has gave him various injuries.
